MHEN Wants Govt to Provide Free Eye Glasses in Public Hospitals

By Wendy Mkandawire

The Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) has asked the government to classify eye glasses as essential medical devices and provide them free of charge in public hospitals, saying many Malawians are still struggling to access quality eye care services, especially in rural areas.

The call comes as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Sight Day today, 8th October 2026, under this year’s theme “Love Your Eyes: Every Story Counts.

MHEN Executive Director George Jobe says eyes and sight are very important, but many people are still unaware of practices that damage their sight.

Jobe said there is a need for awareness about the dangers of exposing eyes to strong sunlight, dust, smoke and heavy rains without protection. He noted that activities such as mining, quarry stone breaking and welding can damage sight when done without protective eyewear.

He emphasized that any changes in vision should be reported to health facilities immediately.

According to Jobe, government and the Ministry of Health should treat eye glasses as disability support equipment, similar to wheelchairs and walking sticks provided to people with physical disabilities.

He also urged Malawians to use the day to support people with eye problems so they are not discriminated against, saying every person has a different story about how the problem developed and how it is affecting them.

World Sight Day is commemorated every second Thursday of October to raise awareness on eye care and advocate for accessible and affordable services for all.
