MERA cuts fuel prices effective June 19 as global prices fall

By Pickson Chipeso
The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has reduced pump prices for petrol, diesel and paraffin, citing a decline in global fuel prices.
In a statement released on June 18, 2026, MERA Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe said the average Free on Board (FOB) prices for the three fuel products decreased compared to May 2026, triggering a price reduction under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM).
He said all three products qualified for a reduction because the decreases in In-Bond Landed Costs exceeded the ±5 percent trigger band.
According to MERA, the new prices approved by the Board are based on June 2026 landed costs, including freight, insurance, levies and margins.
Effective June 19, 2026, petrol will sell at MK5,619 per litre, down from MK6,209; diesel at MK6,306 per litre, down from MK6,687; and paraffin at MK4,771 per litre, down from MK5,709.
The last fuel price revision was effected on May 8, 2026.
