Mchinji Villa on Sunday secured a crucial 21 victory over fellow relegation contenders Chilumba Barracks in an NBS Bank National Division League match played at Mchinji Community Ground.
Mchinji Villa started strongly and won a penalty in the seventh minute, but striker Davie Juwao failed to convert. He later redeemed himself by scoring in the 18th minute to give the home side a 10 lead at halftime.
Immediately after the restart, Juwao, who is chasing the leagues golden boot, doubled the advantage to make it 20. He now has 13 goals, trailing top scorer Rahim Ntondela of Mitundu Baptist who is on 19 goals.
Chilumba Barracks pulled one back in the 77th minute through Kanindo Mwafulirwa, but the visitors failed to find an equaliser despite improved attacking pressure.
Chilumba Barracks coach acknowledged the defeat and said playing away from home is always difficult.
Mchinji Villa coach Abel Mkandawire said he was pleased with the win but stressed that the team must maintain focus in the remaining fixtures to avoid relegation.
The victory moves Mchinji Villa to ninth position, although they remain in the relegation zone of the NBS Bank National Division League.
