Malawi markets tourism potential at SADC anti-corruption conference

By Khumbo Msambala Salanje
Malawi has seized the opportunity presented by the ongoing Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies Conference in Lilongwe to promote its tourism potential and hospitality to regional delegates.
The initiative comes as the country continues to explore ways of boosting foreign exchange earnings amid persistent forex shortages, with tourism regarded as one of the key sectors capable of generating much-needed foreign currency.
Speaking during the official opening of the conference, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Acting Director General and Chairperson of the SADC Anti-Corruption Subcommittee, Gabriel Chembezi, welcomed delegates from across Southern Africa and encouraged them to experience Malawi’s rich culture and tourist attractions during their stay.
Chembezi highlighted some of Malawi’s iconic attractions, including Lake Malawi and local cuisine such as nsima and chambo, describing the conference as an opportunity for visitors to appreciate the country’s unique heritage and warm hospitality.
“As you engage in the conference proceedings, I encourage you to take time to experience Malawi’s rich culture, warm hospitality and beautiful attractions, including the stunning Lake Malawi,” said Chembezi.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Charles Mhango also promoted Malawi as the “Warm Heart of Africa,” urging delegates to explore the country beyond the conference programme.

“While you are here for this important regional meeting, I invite you to experience the Warm Heart of Africa and discover the beauty and hospitality that Malawi has to offer,” said Mhango.
The conference has drawn anti-corruption agency leaders, government officials and development partners from across the SADC region, providing Malawi with added exposure as a destination for tourism and international conferences.
