By Ireen Mseteka
Malawi Lake Services organised a media tour for journalists from Likoma Island to Monkey Bay in Mangochi District aimed at helping them appreciate the services being provided by the company and efforts to improve water transport on Lake Malawi.
Speaking on Thursday during the tour, the company’s Chief Executive Officer Joseph Banda said the institution is committed to providing improved and reliable services to people who depend on lake transport for their daily activities.
Banda said the company also wants to strengthen its relationship with communities from Likoma who are among the major users of lake transport services.
He explained that the recent increase in fares will help the company improve operations, maintain vessels properly and ensure ships continue operating without frequent mechanical challenges.
Banda further disclosed that revenue generated from voyages has increased to over K50 million compared to about K4 million previously collected when the vessel was operated by Mota-Engil.
Likoma Radio reporter Chiletso Biziwick said the tour has been an eye-opener for journalists and will help them report accurately on the company’s operations.
