Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT) will graduate 400 students of 2019 to 2023 classes at Kwacha Events and Leisure garden in Blantyre on Friday this week.
According to MIT website, this is their 16th graduation and the expected graduates are those that pursued diploma and certificate courses such as Hospitality Management, Professional Cookery, International Air Transportation (IATA), Advanced Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management, Hotel Operation, in Food and Beverage service.
In addition to those that were enrolled by MIT management, there are also those from TEVETA that did TEVETA levels 1-3 Food Production, TEVETA levels 1-2 Tour Guide and 3 months upgrading certificate in Professional Cookery, Front Office Operations, Food and Beverage Service and Accommodation Operations, among other courses.
MIT Marketing Officer, Francisco Mwangupili, said on Tuesday that the students graduation failed to take place from 2019 due to Covid-19 pandemic plus other situations beyond the control of the institute.
He said the Tourism Minister, Honourable Vera Kamtukule is expected to be present at the graduation and other officials from educational institution and the corporate world.
“We are expecting a lot of guests to attend the function such as Minister of Tourism, stake holders from education and the banking sector will also be there. Vice chancellors from universities, chief executive officers from various companies and from hotels like Sunbird, Amaryllis and Ryalls among others,” he said.Mwangupili added that MIT also considered those that will not manage to attend the function physically to watch the function through live-streaming on MIT face-book page and on local television stations.
“We plan to live-stream on our face-book page and also television coverage in all major media houses though it will not be live coverage,” he added.
A student, Charles Mkandawire who will graduate with Diploma in Professional Cookery said he is looking forward to the occasion after waiting for it for so long.
“I am so much excited for being among the graduating students after spending almost 3 years at Malawi Institute of Tourism. It has always been my dream to graduate with special skills of cookery from MIT because I aspire to open my own restaurant,” he said.
Mkandawire further says that he is also expecting to hold the position of the head chef at Africa House Lodge and Mitengo House Lodge operated by 1, 2 Travel Africa.
“I intend to contribute to this industry of hospitality and tourism by providing quality standards and services in terms of food preparation in accordance to culinary skills.,” he added.
MIT was formerly known as the Government Hotel Staff Training School and it was established in 1975 by the Malawi Government and operated as a unit within the Department of Tourism (DOT).
