The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced that Malawi has been elected to the Executive Board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) for the 2026-2028 term.

According to MEC Communications Officer Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the elections were held at the 7th A-WEB General Assembly in Manila, Philippines, taking place from 13th to 17th October 2026.

Mwafulirwa said Malawi was elected alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal to represent the Africa Region. The three join Kenya and Uganda, which are already serving on the Board.

He said the Philippines has assumed the Chairmanship of the Association, with other new board members including Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Bhutan, Mongolia, Palestine, Indonesia and Samoa.

A-WEB is a global network bringing together 121 Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from 111 countries to promote cooperation, knowledge sharing and credible, inclusive and transparent elections.

Mwafulirwa said the election places Malawi at the centre of global electoral decision-making.

He said the development reinforces MEC’s commitment to international cooperation and strengthens the Commission’s resolve to deliver professional, transparent and credible electoral processes.

He added that the position gives Malawi a platform to influence the Association’s strategic direction and contribute to global discussions on electoral integrity, emerging technologies, public trust and democratic governance.

MEC is currently participating in the Manila Assembly, which has drawn election bodies from across the world.
