Japanese envoy praises Malawi’s rising judo standards

Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Naito Yasushi, has commended the Judo Association of Malawi for promoting the sport, describing it as key to fostering discipline, respect and peace.
Yasushi made the remarks in Lilongwe during the 2026 Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Championship, where he also applauded the high standard and growing popularity of judo in the country.
“So wonderful, so passionate, and the level of judo is very high as I can tell from my experience that Malawi’s standard is very high,” said Yasushi.
He said he was impressed with the commitment shown by athletes and organisers in sustaining the championship, which continues to attract participation and strengthen ties between Malawi and Japan.
Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Alfred Gangata, reaffirmed government’s commitment’s to the development of sports, describing judo as an important tool for youth empowerment and national development.
“I encourage all the youth to participate in sports, including judo, so that they showcase their talent and be selected to represent the country at international competitions,” said Gangata.
Gangata said government recognises the role of sport in promoting unity and contributing to socio economic growth.
He also thanked the Japanese Embassy for its continued support towards the development of judo in Malawi, saying the sponsorship has helped nurture talent for clubs and national teams.
The championship, which started in 2014, is organised annually by the Japanese Embassy in Malawi, although it was temporarily disrupted during the COVID pandemic.
This year marked the ninth edition of the competition, highlighting the strong partnership between Malawi and Japan and the growing significance of martial arts in youth development.
