The Indian High Commission and the Malawi Film Association (FAMA) have agreed to collaborate in strengthening Malawi’s film industry, with a focus on capacity building, co-production, and international exposure.
The agreement was announced in a statement posted on FAMA’s official Facebook page on Monday. FAMA President Dorothy Kingston said the partnership follows Vice President Gilbert Moyo’s participation in a two-week film course in India aimed at building capacity in the local film industry.
“This partnership will help build capacity among Malawian filmmakers, improve infrastructure development, and open doors for international collaborations, including with Bollywood,” reads the statement quoting Kingston.
According to the statement, the collaboration will focus on training and co-production, organisation of film festivals, food and fashion events, provision of scholarships for FAMA members, and sponsorship to film conferences and seminars in India. The statement further quotes Indian High Commissioner to Malawi Amararam Gujar as saying India is ready to support Malawi’s creative industry through skills development and cultural exchange.
“We are keen to work with FAMA in developing the film industry through training, co-production, and sharing experiences that will benefit young filmmakers in Malawi,” reads the statement.
The development has been welcomed by members of the public, with some followers on FAMA’s social media platforms describing it as a major milestone for Malawi’s creative sector.
“This will put Malawi on the map. Malawians will now be seen on Zee World channel,” commented one follower.
The partnership is expected to enhance skills development, promote cultural exchange, and increase international exposure for Malawian filmmakers.
