HRDC Suspends Demonstrations for Dialogue

By Wendy Mkandawire
The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) leadership says it has suspended the peaceful demonstrations scheduled to start on 1 July 2026, citing concerns and differing views among citizens and stakeholders.
According to HRDC Chairperson Michael Kaiyatsa noted several factors that affected preparations, stating that closing the road would infringe on other people’s rights and disrupt traffic. added that the leadership had been receiving threats from anonymous individuals regarding the planned protests, and that assurance of safety for people and property was vital.
Kaiyasa further said that said the decision followed thorough consultations with affected communities, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and transport operators from the Northern Region.
The organization says it has resolved to suspend the demonstrations to create space for engagements and to seek legal advice on issues that arise during preparations.
Kaiyatsa said HRDC will prioritize engaging the Roads Authority to understand when rehabilitation works on the Karonga-Chiweta Road will begin.
HRDC yesterday announced that it would proceed with peaceful and lawful demonstrations to pressure the government to start rehabilitation works on the 105-kilometre Chiweta-Karonga section of the M1 Road.
