Minister of Local Government, Ben Malunga Phiri, says government is committed to reducing traffic congestion in the country by constructing quality and durable roads in some parts of the country.

Speaking during a ground-breaking ceremony on Friday at Area 47 in Lilongwe, Phiri highlighted the significance of the Cherub Road from Area 47 to Presidential Road in Area 49, saying the road will help ease congestion for people from Area 25 and Area 49 who face challenges getting to town.
The Minister emphasized that government is committed to constructing quality and durable roads and infrastructure that will last for a long period, underscoring that quality always comes with value and is not associated with corruption.
He said government opted for the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) over other companies because it wants discipline, which is usually portrayed by the MDF, unlike some companies that lack financial discipline.

In his remarks, Chief of the Malawi Defence Force, George Alexander Jafu, said the MDF will display its patriotism and commitment by constructing a quality road that will facilitate decongestion.
He appealed to surrounding communities to cooperate with MDF construction personnel during the 12-month construction period, while warning that action will be taken against anyone involved in theft during the works.
The road is expected to be constructed at a cost of K15 billion.
