Government probes alleged negligence, corruption at Mwanza District Hospital

By Brian Wasili
Government has launched investigations into alleged negligence and corruption at Mwanza District Hospital following reports that an expectant woman lost her baby after reportedly being denied timely and free maternity care.
Minister of Health Madalitso Baloyi visited the facility on Monday to follow up on the incident, which has sparked public outrage after circulating on social media.
Speaking during a media interview, Baloyi said government is treating the matter with urgency, adding that investigations are already underway to establish what transpired.
“We are deeply concerned with the reports surrounding this incident. As a ministry, we are following this issue with keen interest, and I want to assure the public that those found guilty will face the law,” she said.
The incident, which reportedly occurred last week, involves allegations that health workers delayed assisting the woman and demanded payment before providing services at the public facility.
According to information gathered, the woman later delivered a stillborn baby and demanded a refund of the money she had allegedly paid to access care, raising concerns over possible malpractice and corruption at the hospital.
Baloyi emphasized that all services in public health facilities are free and warned health workers against engaging in any form of extortion.
“Let me emphasize that public health services are free in Malawi. No patient should be asked to pay for maternity services or any other essential care in government facilities,” she said.
Presidential Advisor on Safe Motherhood Maria Mainja also condemned the alleged malpractice, describing it as a betrayal of public trust and government policy.
“This is unacceptable. The President already issued an executive order condemning corruption in public service, especially in critical sectors like health. Such actions undermine efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths,” said Mainja.
The minister was accompanied by Principal Secretary for Health Dr. Dan Namalikha, Mwanza District Commissioner January Watchman Mvula, and Members of Parliament Felix Njawala and Maurine Chirwa.
The visit underscores governments commitment to improving maternal health services and ensuring accountability among health workers.
