Minister of Sports, Uchizi Mkandawire, has reaffirmed government’s strong commitment to promoting netball describing it as a powerful tool for youth empowerment and raising Malawi’s image internationally.
Mkandawire was speaking during the launch of the 9th Edition of the K47 million Central Region Netball League (CRNL) 2025 at Getaway Mall in Lilongwe on Saturday.
The tournament is sponsored by MPICO plc.

In an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA), Mkandawire said government is making deliberate efforts to ensure passionate and committed netball players benefit from the sport.
He cited ongoing reforms and investments aimed at strengthening sports development across all regions of the country.
“Government is implementing policies that promote inclusivity, modern infrastructure, and long-term talent development. We want to make sport a source of livelihood and national pride,” said Mkandawire.
He described netball as a national asset, saying it has exposed Malawi to the world.
Mkandawire challenged officials to manage the league with purpose, integrity, transparency, and a strong sense of responsibility.
Mkandawire revealed that government is finalizing construction of the Griffin Sayenda Sports Complex describing it as a key milestone project that will elevate indoor sports, especially netball, in Malawi.
“The Griffin Sayenda Complex is a national legacy. It will provide world-class facilities for our athletes. Government is committed to completing it so that sports development is anchored in modern infrastructure,” he said.
Minister of Higher Education, Dr Jessie Kabwila, encouraged netball players to value education as much as they value their athletic talent and opportunities.

“Sports is a short-term career. There is life beyond the court; I am a politician and women’s activist today because I am educated. Netball and education must go hand in hand,” said Kabwila.
She advised the girls to also explore business skills and long-term career planning, saying this would help them sustain themselves beyond their playing years and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Head of Property Services for MPICO plc, Elliot Jambo, assured continued support towards grassroots netball in the region, saying the initiative aligns with the company’s goal of empowering communities through sports development.
“This league has produced national stars. The league continues to contribute immensely to the national team. We believe in nurturing that talent and strengthening our relationship with the community,” Jambo added.
CRNL Chairperson, Fernando Ligola, commended both government and MPICO plc for consistently supporting the growth of netball, noting that the league has improved in quality, reach, and impact over the years.
