The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the complete rehabilitation of the Chiweta-Karonga Road, with the Ministry of Transport stating that procurement processes have commenced and bids are scheduled to close on 20 July 2026.
Ministry of Transport spokesperson Chikondi Chimala made this statement in an interview responding to concerns raised by civil society organizations regarding the deteriorating state of the road.
Chimala said the government recognizes the importance of the road to the nation and remains committed to its complete rehabilitation.
He stated that the government’s immediate priority is to ensure all procurement and implementation processes for the project are properly followed and that funding has already been mobilized.
Chimala also addressed concerns about communication between the Ministry and CSOs, stressing that the government has not closed its doors to dialogue.
He emphasized that the Minister, the Ministry, and all its agencies remain available to engage with stakeholders at any time.
Additionally, he said that as part of ongoing engagements, the Minister recently met with traditional leaders from Karonga and Chitipa, led by Paramount Chief Kyungu.
He mentioned that CSOs were also invited to the meeting but did not attend.
The government says the rehabilitation of the Chiweta-Karonga Road is part of broader efforts to improve road infrastructure in the northern region and enhance connectivity and trade.
