Four individuals of Indian origin have been arrested in connection with the illegal possession of suspected stolen copper wire, following an intelligence-led operation targeting the illegal scrap metal trade in the area
According to the public relations officer for Kanengo police station Macfarlen Mseteka,the suspects, who are directors of Star Metals, a company based in Area 28 with a licence to deal in scrap metal, were apprehended on August 11, 2026 after police officers discovered them in possession of approximately 4,000 kilograms of copper wire.
Msereka said that Intelligence gathered during the operation indicates that the wire was sourced from vandalized ESCOM transformers and residential properties in Area 25.
He highlighted that Upon inspection, police officers in conjunction with Escom technicians determined that 90 percent of the recovered copper wire belongs to the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM).
Additionally, the police recovered six stolen waterboard meters from the suspects’ premises.
The four suspects have been charged with being found in possession of property suspected of being stolen or unlawfully obtained, contrary to the laws of Malawi.
“This arrest follows a surge in vandalism in Area 25, where approximately 45 houses have been targeted by criminals removing electrical wiring”, he added.
According to Nseteka these acts have not only caused significant financial loss to residents and ESCOM but have also disrupted essential services in the community.
The Kanengo police station issues a stern warning to all individuals and businesses dealing in scrap metals and hardware that anyone found selling or purchasing stolen merchandise will be arrested.
The public is further encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities to police to end the vice.
