Farewells took centre stage at Mulanje District full council meeting that was held in the week as some elected council members bade farewell to the council, casting doubts on their return after September 16 Local Government and Parliamentary elections.

During the full council meeting, which was held to get and adopt reports from the service committees, other ward councilors openly said they will not seek another term to represent their communities.

Mulanje District Council Chairperson, Councilor, Daniel Chauluka, said the council had seen remarkable achievement in development during the members’ term of office, citing commitment and coordination as some of the contributing factors.

“Mulanje Council has done a lot as compared to other councils. We are proud that we performed very well and we are proud that we contributed a lot,” he said.

In their term of office, 2019 to 2025, Mulanje Full Council meetings had approved implementation of a lot of projects including those under Governance to Enable Service Delivery (GESD),

Projects such as piped water, school blocks, bridges, community based child care centers (CBCCs) construction have taken place in various wards between 2019 to 2025 after full council approval,

District Commissioner, Macmillan Magomero, thanked members of parliament and ward councils for their dedication in serving people in the district from time they were elected into office.

The District Commissioner also commended good working relationship which exists between the full council members and the secretariat.

He specifically hailed Chikuli Ward Councilor; Beatrice Mlatho, who said she would still follow up on uncompleted projects in her area before leaving office, saying this is patriotism at its best.

Also bidding farewell was long serving Member of Parliament for Mulanje North, Liana Tambala, who said she would not seek fresh mandate to give others a chance to take over the mantle.

The outgoing parliamentarian therefore called on Mulanje District Council to complete projects that she initiated in Mulanje North.

Malawi goes to polls on September 16 to elect president, members of parliament and ward councilors for a term of five years.
