Expert commends Maranatha Academy for motivating top MSCE performers

An education expert has commended Maranatha Academy for awarding best performers in the 2025 Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations, saying the initiative encourages competition and contributes to improved education outcomes.
The remarks follow Maranatha Academys plan to sponsor an educational reward trip to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, for some of Malawis top MSCE performers that scored between 6 to 8 points from both public and private schools.
Education expert, Hexon Ndalama told Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Wednesday that recognising outstanding learners creates healthy competition among students.
“What Maranatha is doing is the right thing because it motivates learners to aim higher. This kind of competition results in better pass rates, unlike when there is no motivation,” he added.
Maranatha Academys Public Relations Officer, Tunthu Nyirongo, said the trip was part of fulfilling a promise made to outstanding students after release of the 2025 MSCE examination results.
“This trip to Victoria Falls is not only to honor our promise, but also to celebrate excellence and inspire other students. We are maintaining the tradition of recognizing top achievers; therefore, the best-performing students from both public and private schools who scored between 6 to 8 points will be included, Nyirongo added.
She added that although the group was scheduled to leave on Wednesday, the trip had been delayed due to scarcity of forex.
Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), released the 2025 MSCE results in Lilongwe recently.
Out of 194,584 candidates that sat for the exams, a total of 113,708 passed, representing a 58.44 percent pass rate, and a total of 202,940 candidates were registered, with a turnout of 95.88 percent.
Maranatha Academy also made headlines last year when it awarded two of its highest-scoring MSCE students, Owen Jelasi and Hellen Thombozi, with K2 million each and scholarships to study at Sharda University in India, although they later opted to pursue studies at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS).
