Dowa innovator launches hub to nurture Malawi’s tech talent

By Sylvester Kumwenda
A 24-year-old innovator from Dowa, Ernest Andrew, who gained national attention in 2024 for developing electricity generated from air and other components, has launched a technology hub aimed at supporting innovators across Malawi.
The initiative, called Technical Empowerment Hub, was launched Saturday at Dowa Community Ground to help innovators access resources, mentorship and financial support to develop their ideas.
“When developing innovations many people discourage you or think your ideas cannot materialise, which makes it difficult for innovators to progress,” said Andrew.
Andrew said the hub will provide financial support, knowledge, skills development and research opportunities for innovators to turn their ideas into practical solutions.
He added that promising innovators will also be enrolled in a 14-month incubation camp where they will receive accommodation and technical support to focus on developing their innovations.
Andrew said the hub will further assist successful innovators to establish factories and start businesses that can transform their ideas into sustainable enterprises.
He explained that his own experience of struggling to develop his innovation inspired him to create a platform that supports other innovators facing similar challenges.
Andrew, who also runs Renewable Energy Empowerment based in Blantyre, said the initiative will be open to innovators across the country regardless of gender.
He said the hub will be self-funded and is expected to begin operations on March 20 with offices planned in five districts including Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu.
Guest of honour Dr Stephen Chisati, an engineer at Airtel Malawi responsible for network planning and optimisation, described the launch as a major step towards promoting innovation in the country.
“The hub will create space for hidden innovators to showcase their ideas and contribute to national development,” said Chisati.
One of the trustees of the hub Alfred Chauwa said the initiative aligns with Malawi 2063 which recognises innovation as a key driver for industrialisation.
