Chiefs urged to promote peace and unity

By Andrew Mkonda
First Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah has urged traditional leaders to promote peace and unity among their subjects in order for the country to have a meaningful development.
Ansah made the call on Saturday at Jobe Nyaka village in the area of Traditional Authority Kalumbu in Lilongwe district during the coronation of Alida Nyaka Mazungwi as Village Headwoman Jobe Nyaka.
The Vice President said the government under the leadership of President Arthur Peter Mutharika is committed to bring unity among all Malawians regardless of their tribe, religion and political affiliation.
“As chiefs you need to lead by example to your subjects by promoting peace and unity and at the same time avoid corruption and biasness on any government programmes in your areas, such as the distribution of relief food items.
“As traditional leaders, you must make sure that only vulnerable people in your area get the relief food items and not everyone who is able to get the food stuff on their own,” she said.
Ansah then assured the people that the government is doing all it can to make sure that no one dies of hunger in the country.
Speaking on behalf of other Chiefs, Senior Chief Kalumbu said traditional leaders will continue to be custodians of development, social cohesion and cultural heritage.
And speaking on behalf of the royal family, Thammy Phiri assured the people that the newly installed chief will work hand in hand with the people in her area, as she has been doing before.
Phiri then urged the newly coronated chief to be exemplary to her subjects in preserving culture.
Village headwoman Jobe Nyaka is a retired civil servant who worked as a principal youth officer, and she retired from civil service in 2019.
During the event the Vice President distributed 150 bags of maize flour to vulnerable people in the area through Dr. Jane Ansah Foundation.
