President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday received the inaugural fuel Train at Marka Border Railway Station which arrived in the country from Beira in Mozambique.
The train carrying 1.2 million litres of petroleum products arrived at the station after a 42-year break due to the bad state of the railway line.
The administration of President Chakwera has revamped the railway line from Villa Nova, Marka Boarder Station to Bangula in Nsanje District whose construction works are still in progress.
According to National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA), Beira-Marka covers a distance of 360 kilometres, making it the shortest route compared to 821 kilometres of Nacala and 1546 kilometres from Dar es Salaam.
While in Nsanje District, President Chakwera will also inspect Nsanje District Hospital and newly constructed Tengani Market at Senior Chief Tengani and visit Mpatsa Primary School Temporary Shelter in the same area.
