The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has written the Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, seeking disclosure of the Madrassa passport printing contract and the price build-up for passport fees.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday and signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, the organisation referenced a previous request made in February 2024 that questioned the exorbitant passport fees and raised suspicions of foul play in the contract negotiated by the previous administration.
“The nation appears to have reached a consensus that the previous Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regime fleeced citizens through shoddy deals. One such contract is the Madrassa passport printing deal, and there are demands that the contract be made public and the price build-up disclosed,” reads the statement.
CDEDI invokes the Access to information (ATI) Act, citing the need for transparency and accountability.
“Malawians are paying too much to access a passport,” adds the statement.
