In a groundbreaking moment widely regarded as “history in the making,” Malawi’s President, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, made a special guest appearance on Podcast Malawi. This interaction provided an unprecedented opportunity for the nation’s urban youth to connect directly with the President as he addressed their concerns, shared insights, and reflected on their aspirations.
The engaging discussion was skillfully facilitated by podcast hosts Brandon Jones, Bensam, and Henmag, who cultivated a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. By moving away from the traditional formalities of a question-and-answer session, the hosts ensured a candid and relatable conversation that resonated with their youthful audience.

The episode began on an upbeat note, with Brandon admiring the President’s sharp sense of fashion and Henmag diving into lighter topics by discussing Chakwera’s favorite football team, Arsenal FC. The conversation further revealed a more personal side of the President as he shared his love for music, including his background in playing the guitar.
Dr. Chakwera went on to express his admiration for the meaningful engagement he had experienced with the youth during the three youth State of the Nation Addresses (SONAs). He emphasized his commitment to transforming their ideas into action rather than leaving them as mere discussions. In his words, “The youth are the leaders of tomorrow; the future is now.”
Reflecting on his own journey, the President shared heartfelt memories of his time serving as the president of the Assemblies of God church, a role that he credits for shaping his values and leadership ethos. He remarked, “(You know sometimes) we are what we are because of what we were yesterday,” underlining the importance of past experiences in shaping one’s identity and purpose.

When addressing corruption, Dr. Chakwera was resolute, affirming that combating this issue requires collective responsibility. He called upon every individual to contribute to its prevention, underscoring that the fight against corruption is not solely the government’s role but a shared duty for all Malawians.
The recent Podcast Malawi presidential program has stirred quite the buzz online, showcasing a blend of opinions about the president’s approach to engaging with the youth. While some critics are quick to point fingers, accusing him of campaigning without formally asking for votes, a significant number of listeners have come to his defense. They see him as a refreshing figure—humble, cool, and genuinely interested in connecting with the younger generation. It’s not every day you see a leader willing to step into the ring of public discourse, and that’s worth celebrating!

What’s particularly impressive is how the Podcast Malawi team has managed to create a platform where such dialogues can flourish. Their ability to host the president in a relaxed setting has drawn commendation, proving that political discussions don’t always have to be stiff and formal. Instead, they can be engaging and relatable, which is exactly what we need in today’s political landscape. The positive feedback from the youth highlights the importance of leaders who are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and engage with the people directly.
In a world where many politicians shy away from media interactions, this president could very well set a new standard. His willingness to converse openly might inspire others to follow suit, fostering a healthier relationship between leaders and their constituents. This represents progress, and to be candid, an increased sense of approachability in politics would benefit us all.
