Beautify Malawi, with support from NBS Bank and NICO Group, on Monday distributed assorted food items to 500 vulnerable households in Area 44 of Lilongwe City, targeting senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Speaking during the distribution exercise held at Senior Chief Tsabango’s area, First Lady of the Republic of Malawi, Madame Gertrude Mutharika, called on corporate institutions to partner with community-based initiatives to improve the welfare of vulnerable households across the country.
Madame Mutharika said collaboration between the private sector and social organisations is critical in addressing economic and climate-related challenges affecting many Malawians.
“Many Malawians have been affected by the heavy rains experienced across the country. This is the time for institutions to come together and support households that are struggling,” the First Lady said.
The beneficiaries received maize flour, cooking oil, sugar, salt and other basic necessities.
National Coordinator for Beautify Malawi, Dingiswayo Jere, said the initiative is in line with the organisation’s vision of promoting clean and healthy environments.
“It is the First Lady’s wish to share with vulnerable households during the festive season. At the same time, Beautify Malawi believes that a happy and supported community is better positioned to care for its environment,” Jere said.
He added that the programme deliberately started in Area 44 to strengthen community responsibility at neighbourhood level, expressing hope that more institutions will support similar initiatives in the future.
