Balaka District Council honours outstanding teachers and learners

By Mary Makhiringa
Balaka District Council has honoured 149 outstanding teachers from various education zones across the district for their exceptional role in improving learner performance in the 2025 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education examinations.
The awards were presented on Tuesday at Mpilisi Primary School during a ceremony that brought together education officials, community leaders, teachers and learners to celebrate the educators’ contribution to academic excellence despite ongoing resource challenges.
Balaka District Commissioner, Tamanya Harawa, said the council is committed to motivating teachers through incentives that strengthen the district’s education standards.
“We will keep motivating teachers to work hard to improve education outcomes in this district. Their dedication is evident in the outstanding results seen this year, and their efforts cannot go unnoticed,” Harawa said.
Saulos Namani, Director of Education and Sports for Balaka District Council, praised the award recipients for their commitment and pledged continued support.
“We are celebrating today because of the effort that our teachers invested in our learners. As a council, we will continue providing support through more resources, training, monitoring and community engagement,” Namani said.
Among the awardees was Standard Eight teacher Judith Kadzombe from Mponda Primary School, who received special recognition after her learners achieved 45 A grades in English.
“Seeing my learners excel in their academic journey is already a reward, but being honoured today reinforces that our sacrifices and love for the learners are valued. As teachers, we face many challenges, but this kind of appreciation motivates us to keep giving our best,” Kadzombe said.
During the ceremony, teachers received monetary awards, stationery and school bags, while outstanding learners from other zones were also recognised for exceptional performance.
The award ceremony was supported by National Bank of Malawi, NBS Bank, FDH Bank and the Concerned Youth Organisation, which partnered with the council to promote excellence in education.
