Christians under the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi have called for stronger parental guidance to help young people develop sound moral and spiritual values.
The call was made during Maria Day celebrations held over the weekend at Phalombe Anglican Church, where parents and guardians were urged to take full responsibility in guiding children away from immoral behaviour.
Guest of honour Angella Chimwanza said there is a need for parents to protect children from challenges such as sexual immorality, alcohol, drug and substance abuse.
“Parents and guardians should guide children while they are still young, so that they grow up with strong moral and spiritual values,” she said.
Chimwanza also encouraged young people to emulate the life of the Virgin Mary by living in obedience, humility and fear of God.In an interview, Bishop Alinafe Kalemba of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi said the celebration serves as a reminder of the role the Virgin Mary played in God’s plan of salvation.
“We celebrate Maria Day every year knowing that the salvation we have today came through God using the Virgin Mary. This clearly shows that salvation can also come through people,” he said.
Kalemba said this year’s theme, “Stand firm in the word of God, not people,” encourages Christians to remain steadfast in their faith despite challenges.
Group Village Head Bokosi also urged Christians to uphold the word of God and spend time with fellow believers to strengthen their faith and values.
The event brought together Anglican congregants from Mulanje, Chiradzulu, Thyolo and Blantyre districts, as well as members from other churches.
