The Alumni Association of Chaminade Secondary School has on Monday donated 50 mattresses to the school as one way of motivating students and giving back to their former institution.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Vice President of the association, Malumbo Gondwe, said the group, which was established seven years ago, remains committed to supporting learners at the institution.
“This donation is part of our ongoing efforts to improve the learning environment at Chaminade. Previously, we funded a K20 million solar back up power project to ensure students are able to study without interruption,” said Gondwe.
“Chaminade shaped us academically, morally, socially and we are proud to be associated with the school which is why we are here to donate 50 mattresses, worth over K 5 million Malawi Kwacha,” he added.
Headteacher of the school, Amin Pwele, commended the gesture and appealed for more alumni to join hands in supporting the school, which was opened in 1962.
“Chaminade currently has 480 students, and while we are grateful for the support from our former learners, we still need repairs and new paint for most of our infrastructure,” said Pwele.
Student representative, Blessings Kipandula, thanked the alumni for the donation, saying it will go a long way in improving student accommodation.
“We are grateful for this support. As prefects, we will make sure the mattresses are well taken care of so that they last longer. We are also motivated by this example and pledge to do the same when we leave the school,” said Kipandula.
