Government has removed Joseph Bongololo Gondwe from the position of Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe, as ordered by the President of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
In a statement signed by the Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Moses Chimphepo, government says the removal follows Tumbuka culture on succession, where the son of the departed chief takes over the throne.
The statement further says the removal is in accordance with Section 11(1a) of the Chiefs Act, which provides that a person ceases to be entitled to be a chief if he is no longer entitled under the customary law of that tribe.
The government has however request the Gondwe to ensure smooth transfer of power to the new paramount Chief who will be appointed based on the tumbuka culture
Joseph Bongololo Gondwe was installed as Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe in April 2022 during the leadership of former President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
