By Dorothy Kachitsa
The Mozambican First Lady, Gueta Chapo, has provided assistance to Malawian citizens who are fleeing the wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. The assistance which includes food, water and blankets has been given to a total number of 700 Malawians who are currently at the Maputo bus terminal awaiting transport to Tete and later Mwanza border.
The Mozambican First Lady met with the Malawians also contacted transport companies to take them to the city of Tete. Madam Gueta Chapo stated that as a mother she is concerned with the welfare of every person regardless of their country of origin. The Malawian citizens applauded Madam Chapo for the kind gesture.

Thousands of Malawians are returning home from South Africa following a wave of anti-immigrant demonstrations and xenophobic violence targeting foreign nationals. Many are being processed through the Mwanza Border Post and received at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where the government and humanitarian groups are coordinating relief efforts.

The returnees face significant challenges, as many abandoned their jobs and livelihoods. Humanitarian agencies and the Malawi Government are working to provide assistance to the most vulnerable, including pregnant women and children.
