Parliamentary ad-hoc commitee established to investigate the plane crash that killed former Vice President Saulos Chilima and 8 others on 10 June, 2024 has heard that Mzuzu Airport was operating without certification from the Civil Aviation Authority as the port did not meet required security standards which included a fence.
According to the Aviation Authority, in situations where an airport operates without certification, clients using the facility do so at owner’s risk.
The Airport was however subsequently granted an certification to operate from June 2025-June 2026 after fulfilling some of the certification requirements.
The committee, led by Chairperson Walter Nyamulandu Manda also visited fire and weather departments at the facility as part of the committee’s preliminary investigations.
Earlier today, the committee visited the plane crush site at Nthungwa in Nkhatabay district, an exercise he said is part of the committee’s strategy to identify potential witnesses in the investigation.
