Malawi among 10 best governed countries in Africa

By Pauline Kaude
Malawi has been ranked among the top 10 best-governed countries in Africa in the latest 2026 governance assessment, a remarkable milestone that highlights the country’s progress in democratic governance, political rights, and press freedom.
This is happening under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s administration who assumed office in October last year.
The ranking, reported by Adekunle Agbetiloye on February 21, 2026, which puts Malawi on position 8, reflects steady gains across the continent, with African countries increasingly embracing democratic openness.
For Malawi, this recognition marks a significant step forward in strengthening institutions, enhancing accountability, and promoting citizen participation in governance, the report says.
According to the report, while political rights and press freedom are improving across Africa, weak rule of law and corruption control continue to challenge overall governance performance.
Malawi’s placement among the top performers demonstrates growing confidence in its democratic systems and governance structures, signaling a positive trajectory compared to many countries still grappling with systemic governance constraints.
Political and governance commentator Dr. George Chaima has applauded the current government for its commitment to good governance among others, describing the news as a clear sign of progress under the current administration.
” This is good news to hear. I believe that this shows that the current government is performing well as compared to the previous regime. We changed government because the previous one was not performing according to the expectations of citizens. It is important for the government to fix other bottlenecks which are thorns in the throat,” said Chaima.
