Second Vice President Enock Kanzingeni Chihana has described late banker Webster Khwima Kaunga as a great man who made significant contributions to Malawi’s development through his work in the banking sector.
Speaking on Monday during the burial ceremony of Kaunga , 55, at Chizobe Village in Traditional Authority Muzikubola Chihana said Kaunga was a national asset whose selfless service to the country will be greatly missed.
“Webster was a hard worker who was deeply involved in the banking sector. Through his contribution to the sector, the nation has lost a great man,” said Chihana, speaking through his aide Nelson Mataya Nyirenda.
In his eulogy, Kaunga’s son, Webster Junior, said his father’s death was a huge blow not only to the family but also to the nation.
“My dad was a great man, as shown by the crowd gathered here at the funeral service. Through what he did, the nation has lost a pillar, the community has lost a pillar, and our family has lost a pillar,” he said.
Former Vice President Khumbo Kachali said Kaunga was actively involved in many activities, including church work, social initiatives and sports.
“The reason this man will be greatly missed is because he used to take part in many activities, both social and sporting,” said Kachali.
Kaunga, 55, worked for National Bank of Malawi in various positions. He died on Wednesday after an illness and is survived by his wife and three children.
