Government, through the Ministry of Education, is geared to implement a project called Building Education Foundation through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) targeting primary school learners as one way of boosting education standards in the country.

Speaking Thursday in Lilongwe during a District Executive Committee (DEC) meeting, BEFIT National Programme Officer Victor Katchika said the project’s goal is to improve learning outcomes in reading and numeracy through use of android tablets for learners in standards one to four in all 6,000 public primary schools across the country.

Katchika said the program has been designated to help learners with their learning process and be able to access lessons through a calibrated teacher on the tablets.

“This program is being led by the Malawi Government to improve primary school children acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills. We believe that with the use of the tablets it will help them in so many ways,” he said.

According to Katchika, the tablets will be installed with specialized application on android system which will help in captivating numeracy and literacy levels in learners thereby improving the learning process.

Lilongwe West Director of Education and Sports, Alfred Mphandamkoko, hailed government for the initiative saying it will help in providing access to quality education and also transform the education status of the country.

“As education stakeholders, we have been discussing on a number of areas that need to be worked on to bring our education to the levels we desire.

“As the world is going digital, we need to also make sure that all our learners know the use and benefits of technology. So, this is a very important initiative which will help in shaping the mindset of the future generations,” he said
